The Music We Dance to Might Surprise You

What music comes to mind when you think: “ballroom dance”? A poll of the general public would present answers like:

  • Slow & steady
  • Boring ballads
  • Tunes otherwise unrecognizable by anyone alive post-1920

Perfect. The surprise will be all the sweeter when we say: Wrong. Wrong-o. Wrong-orama.
Here’s why:

1) It’s called Ballroom Dance. Not Boring Dance.
First, there are a variety of different ballroom dances. It’s not all, “Waltz-y to the left. Waltz-y to the right.” Check out our 20+ dance styles right here.

2) We like the same music you like. So we’re going to dance to it.
We instructors at Arthur Murray Royal Oak eat, live and breathe dance. We hear music all day and all night. So of course we’re going to choose fun and far more tolerable tunes to step to. If you were among those who thought ballroom dance music was ho-hum-horrible, prepare for your mind to be blown with this list of songs we pair with each dance style:

Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars – Cha Cha
Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran – Night Club Slow
Want To Want Me by Jason Derulo – Hustle / Cha Cha / Swing
Shake It Off by Taylor Swift – Swing
All About That Bass by Meghan Trainor – Swing
Sugar by Maroon 5 – Hustle
Blank Space by Taylor Swift – Rumba
Love Me Like You Do by Ellie Goulding – Rumba
A Thousand Years by Christina Perri – Viennese Waltz
Vivir Mi Vida by Marc Anthony – Salsa
The Way You Look Tonight by Frank Sinatra – Foxtrot
Welcome To Burlesque by Cher – Tango

That’s right. Bruno Mars, Derulo, Swift and Trainor are all welcome here. If you learned something new about ballroom dance today, we’d like to show you a few more things on the dance floor.

Call us and we’ll tell you when to stop in so you can see how we’re putting fresh ballroom moves to fresh tunes every day.
